Hendricks and Hit The Lights Win Southwest Reining Horse Association Futurity
By Cheryl
Magoteaux
ARDMORE,
OK - October 17, 2002 - When Dell Hendricks rode to the win of the Southwest
Reining Horse Association Futurity on Hit The Lights, he did so in fine
style, displaying earth-moving stops and scoring 147.5 on the son of Grays
Starlight, owned by Doug Adair of Mesa, Arizona.
The stallion was, in Dell's words, "surprisingly easy to show! Whatever
I asked him to do, he tried really hard."
Hendricks teamed up with Hit The Lights in August, when Adair purchased
him from Mike Moser and Mary Davis of Gainesville, Texas. "Mike did a
really good job," said Hendricks. He continued, "I just stepped up the
maneuvers at speed and he handled it."
Since
changing programs and trainers can sometimes be confusing Dell had been
prepared to wait for Hit The Lights to adjust to his program. "I expected
him to come into his own as a four, five and six-year-old, but this is
the first place I've showed him and he was great - all the way through."
Winning
the event on Hit The Lights was, in Hendricks' words, a poignant victory,
after the death of his sire earlier in the week. "I thought it was fitting,
after they lost him, to go out and win a reining with a son."
Hendricks
scored 144.5 to finish in a tie for fourth on Hangin With The Doc, a son
of Hangten Peppy out of Docs Lady Taylor, owned by Leanne Roberts of Atherton,
California.
Interestingly,
Hangin With The Doc was formerly owned by Adair, as well. Dell explains,
"Doug had the opportunity to sell him, but when he did, he told me to
go looking for something we could win on at the futurity. That's when
we found Hit The Lights."
Like Hit The
Lights, Hangin With The Doc showed well but was in the penalty box for
a 1-point overspin. "Other than that, he was really, really good!" Both
Hangin With The Doc and Hit The Lights will be shown next at the NRHA
Futurity in Oklahoma City November 29 through December 7.
It was, on all
fronts, a good weekend for Hendricks, who also won the Novice Horse Open
class on Reminic N Dun It, owned by Tim and Colleen McQuay and Dave and
Bonnie Silva of Tolland, Connecticut.
