European
Shows Attract Top Reiners
By Cheryl

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA (February
6, 2002) – The changing climate of reining worldwide coupled with the
emergence of large added money shows in Europe has begun to affect the
way top reiners plan their competitive calendars.
With the increased number
of approved shows and significant added money available, exhibitors seeking
National Reining Horse Association Open titles can no longer plan to complete
strictly in the United States and many are opting to include a European
jaunt to their 2002 schedule.
NRHA Futurity Champion Dell
Hendricks is an example. During the 2001 American Quarter Horse Association
World Show, Dell Hendricks rode the flashy stallion, Broadmoor, owned
by Imp Agr Cuogi of Vignola, Italy, to claim the AQHA Junior Reining World
Championship. After the win, it was time to chart a new course for Broadmoor.
"We decided to haul him for
the 2002 National Reining Horse Association Open World Championship,"
Hendricks said. "The plan is to show him at the larger open classes here
in the United States the first part of the year, then we'll send him overseas
for the big events in late summer in Europe."
Hendricks is convinced that
the European shows will be a major factor in the NRHA open title race
for 2002.
"With the development of
the big open purses in Europe, you really don't want to take the chance
of not going there. The total added money on four shows this fall is over
$110,000." Hendricks commented.
Dell Hendricks is a National
Reining Horse Association Futurity Champion, National Reining Breeders
Classic Champion and 2-time American Quarter Horse Association World Champion.
He is also a member of the NRHA Board of Directors. He and his wife Terri
live in North Texas, where they stand several stallions, as well as running
a full-scale training operation.
The National Reining Horse
Association is the worldwide governing body of reining, responsible for
promoting the sport, working to insure the highest standards of competition
and educating members and the public. For information on the NRHA visit
