Repeat Wins for a Pair of Champions!

Katy,
Texas --- Dell Hendricks and Reminic N Dunit maintained their dominance
of the 2004 National Reining Breeders Classic in the Saturday night finals
when they marked a score of 228 to win the event and earn $60,000 for
owners Tim and Colleen McQuay and David and Bonnie Silva.
It was
a repeat win of last year's NRBC, and the flashy palomino with the impossibly
long mane became the only horse to earn two NRBC Open titles. Interestingly,
a day earlier, Lance Griffin of Dewinton, Alberta, rode Whiz N Tag Chex,
the 2003 Non Pro Champion, to the 2004 title, becoming the first Non Pro
horse and rider to post duplicate wins in that division.
Hendricks and Reminic N Dunit were flawless throughout, winning the preliminary
round of competition with a 227 score, collecting $13,868. Reminic N Dunit's
total earnings for the week boosted his lifetime earnings past $164,000
– making him the highest money earning son of his sire, Hollywood Dun
It.
Hollywood
Dun It foals earned over $169,000 at the 2004 NRBC, and the legendary
sire received the NRBC Crystal Leading Sire Award, as well as a check
for $2500 for his owners Tim & Colleen McQuay and Jennifer Easton. Topsail
Whiz was the Reserve Leading Sire with over $145,000 won at the NRBC and
owner Bob Loomis accepted the $2500 award for his siring the Non Pro Champion.
For Dell
Hendricks, the win – an unprecedented fourth NRBC Open title – was astonishing.
"This is incredible," he said, shortly after the finals. "It still blows
me away that Tim (McQuay) has me show him. It's an honor to show him for
Tim!"
In a
special déjà vu instance, Dell and "Remie" drew up fifth in the finals
– the exact same draw they had in last year's event. But the early draw
was a plus, as far as Dell was concerned. He noted, "I wanted to go first
with him. With three in the finals, he's the one I needed to be on to
get ready. The other two are fairly simple to prepare, but Remie will
fib to you. He'll act like he's warmed up enough then if you speed up
and slow down he'll play and buck!"
Hendricks
complimented the stallion. "He seems to be getting stronger all the time.
It's incredible that we'll have the opportunity to come back next year,"
he said, referring to the NRBC's policy of allowing 4-, 5- and 6-year-olds
to compete.
The
affable champion has collected over $300,000 in competition at the NRBC
and his career earnings are approaching the million dollar mark.
That's
a milestone that was crossed by one of his contemporaries, Todd Bergen,
during the NRBC Finals. Bergen, of Eagle Point, Oregon, needed only $12,000
to become a million dollar earner in National Reining Horse Association
competition. He earned that and more on Saturdaynight Custom, owned by
Arcese Quarter Horse with a score of 224.5 that tied with Duane Latimer
and 2003 NRHA Futurity Champion The Great Whiz (owned by Lance Griffin)
for the NRBC Reserve Championship. Each received $37,360.
Latimer,
like Hendricks, had three horses qualified for the finals, and he earned
over $98,000 to retain his position as the NRBC's All Time Leading money
earner.
Maryse
Dupaul claimed both the Intermediate Open and Limited Open Championships
on Barbie Dun It (Hollywood Dun It X Just Plain Barbie), owned by Terry
& Lorrie Thrasher. Her 221 score was good for a paycheck of $22,111 in
the Intermediate and $8,644 in the Limited.
Brent
Naylor become the Reserve Intermediate Open Champion on Dun With Caution(Hollywood
Dun It X Cautious) owned by RVR Performance Horses, earning $13,459.
There
was a tie for the Limited Open Reserve Championship between Maverick Smith
on Dun It To Rein (Holllywood Dun It X Heir To Rein) owned by Adair Reiners
and John O'Hara on Chics Velvet Lady (Smart Chic Olena X Texas Velvet
Lady). Their identical 214 scores earned $4,604.
The
National Reining Breeders Classic , based in Byars , Oklahoma , is the
most successful stallion incentive program in reining history. In just
seven years, the NRBC has grown to include over 260 subscribed stallions
and the payout at the 2004 National Reining Breeders Classic hit right
near the $900,000 mark. For information on the NRBC, visit the web site
