Dell Hendricks Wins Congress Reining Futurity

In early October 2003, Dell Hendricks rode Starbucks Sidekick to win the prestigious All American Quarter Horse Congress Reining Futurity. The win was worth $27,462 and boosted Hendricks' National Reining Horse Association Lifetime earnings past the $800,000 mark.

It was the second win for the gutsy gray stallion owned by Doug Adair of Mesa, Arizona. Just over a month earlier, Hendricks had ridden him to win the Co-Championship of the Kansas Reining Horse Association Sunflower Slide Futurity August 29-31. At the Congress, he finished second in the first go round, with a score of 220, then marked a sterling 222.5 to win the finals and the event. Reserve honors and $16,716 went to Brent Wright of Ottawa, Kansas for a score of 220 on Lena Gallo, owned by Lapke Quarter Horses.

Dell Hendricks + Starbucks SidekickHendricks was thrilled with "Sidekick's" performance. "He's a great little horse – and now he's two-for-two," he said. "He was really solid here and he never got into trouble."

He was also glad to note that Sidekick's owner, Doug Adair, was on hand to witness the win. "This is the first time Doug had gotten to be at a show where I won on one of his horses!"

Starbucks Sidekick is a product of the first Legacy Reining Breeders Sale (held in 2001), and his Congress win marks the fourth Futurity title earned by Legacy Sale Alumni.

Although Dell Hendricks has won the NRHA Futurity and is a three-time winner of the National Reining Breeders Classic, this was his first Congress victory, and the late finish of the event (approximately 2 am) did nothing to dampen his enthusiasm for the win and for his horse.

That might be because of his new accommodations at the Congress, which was the first show for Dell to use his new Bloomer Horse Trailer sponsored by Carl Black Trailer Company of Hiram, Georgia.

Hendricks commented, "In my opinion, the Bloomer Trailers are the best built trailers around. And, with the living quarters, it is a home away from home. I am very happy to be hauling down the road with a Bloomer Trailer and to be associated with Kevin Redstrom and Carl Black Trailer Company."
