It’s been a great year for the team of Hendricks and Adair – Dell Hendricks and Doug Adair, that is!
At the 2005 National Reining Breeders Classic, held April 19-24, Dell crossed the million dollar mark then rode Hit The Lights, owned by Doug Adair’s Adair Reiners, LLC, to the NRBC Open title and a $60,000 paycheck.
A mere month later, at the National Reining Horse Association Derby in Oklahoma City, Hendricks pocketed another $42,297, this time for earning the Reserve Championship on another Adair-owned horse, Starbucks Sidekick.
Dell and Starbucks Sidekick (Smart Starbuck x Dun It For Chex) scored 224.5 and led the event until the very last rider and ultimate winner, Shawn Flarida, passed his mark on NRHA Futurity Champion Smart Spook.
Starbucks Sidekick has been a successful show horse since his futurity year, when he won the All American Quarter Horse Congress and Kansas Futurities in 2003. Successful showring ventures since then have pushed his lifetime earnings well over the $100,000 mark.
Starbucks Sidekick will continue his show rings exploits, according to Hendricks. "We'll keep showing him, since he's got one more year of aged events."
At the Derby, Dell's game plan was to keep the dark gray stallion fresh in the early summer heat of the Oklahoma City Fairgrounds. "I didn't school hard – I loped him about 15 minutes the night before, then warmed him up a little and went to show." Then ensuing 224.5 score was the stallion's highest-ever marking.
Dell has a special "family" connection to Starbucks Sidekick. He explains, "I won my very first NRHA reining on this horse's grandma, Silver N Blue Chex in Scottsdale Arizona in 1993."
What a difference a decade makes! In just twelve years, Hendricks has come from a rookie ride to being one of the National Reining Horse Association's elite Million Dollar Riders.

He remains committed to winning the NRHA Derby, one of the few titles that has eluded him. "The Derby is one show I've tried for some time to win," Dell explains, then laughs. "There's always next year!"
At the Derby, he's been Reserve twice, third once and fourth once, so most experts are betting he'll reach his goal of adding the Derby crown to the five NRBC Championships, a NRHA Futurity Championship, a USET Gold Medal, and AQHA World Championships.
In addition to competing at the top level of the reining industry, Dell is devoted to the continued growth in all areas of the sport and will serve as the National Reining Horse Association President in 2006.
Dell and his wife, Terri, operate Hendricks Reining Horses, a state-of-the-art breeding and training facility in Tioga, Texas where they stand Starbucks Sidekick, along with NRBC Champion Hit The Lights, AQHA Reserve World Champion Dunnit In Hollywood and NRBC Champion Starlights Wrangler.
